ISPS

The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) represents the culmination of just over a year’s intense work by IMO’s Maritime Safety Committee and it’s Maritime Security Working Group on the review of measures and procedures to prevent acts of terrorism which threaten the security of passengers and crew and the safety of ships.

The ISPS Code encompasses the following functional requirements:

  • The Gathering and Assessment of Information with Respect to Security Threats
  • Required maintenance of Communication Protocols
  • Prevention of Unauthorized Access to Ships, Port Facilities, and Their Restricted Areas
  • Preventing the Introduction of Unauthorized Weapons, Incendiary Devices, and Explosives to Ships and Port Facilities
  • Provide a Means of Raising the Alarm in Reaction to Security Threats and/or Incidents
  • Required, Three Stage, Ship and Port Facility Security Plans Based Upon Security Assessments
  • Required Training, Drills, and Exercises to Ensure Familiarity with Security Plans and Procedures
